When a CD has no liner notes, an incorrect song title [bad word] credit, along with the wrong date of recording is likely to be of questionable origin. This live set by Max Roach is listed as a 1960 concert in an unspecified city; it actually is from a 1964 Paris performance. The [bad word] is joined by tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan, pianist Coleridge Perkinson and bassist Eddie Khan (whose name is misspelled "Kahn"). The opening tracked, given as Roach's "The Night Mountain," is an extended workout ofJordan's "The Highest Mountain," featuring a solo by each member in turn. The moving duet of "Ceciliana" showcases Perkinson with Khan playing both arco and pizzicato. Roach's interpretation of the bop favorite "Mop Mop" is [bad word]  while Jordan also sits out the trio arrangement of Duke Jordan's "Jordu," which opens with Khan's moody droning bowed solo. The tenor saxophonist finally returns for a loping take of Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady," with the leader sticking to [bad word]  Although there is a bit of occasional static in the source material (which is likely a radio broadcast), the sound is far better than the proofreading for this CD. All in all, it is worth acquiring if found at a reasonable price.
