Track 3 – Sweets

It was worth waiting a long time.

Actually, I finally got something I’ve always wanted. I’ll show it especially to you.

Inoko mochi [1] from Eifukuya!

You’ve heard of Eifukuya, haven’t you?

That’s right, it’s that popular shop which always has a queue outside of it everyday. Every year, on the first day of the tenth month of the lunar calendar, which is the day of the boar, they sell inoko mochi. When I first came here, I heard that it both looked and tasted good.

I went to buy inoko mochi every year and I learned a surprising thing there. Eifukuya wouldn’t accept first time customers. I had to make lots of effort to even make myself known there, never mind buying inoko mochi.
 [bad word] to think of it, that was the first time Toshi got angry and told me to stop buying sweets. Well, that’s not important though.

I thought that the next year would be my year, but I was preoccupied with Shinsengumi business on that day. I thought about whether to send someone on an errand, but because they were sweets that I very much wanted to try, it was more meaningful for me to buy them myself.

I gave up in the end. Then finally, last year, I ran to buy them first thing in the morning, and then discovered another surprising thing.

Unbelievably, the inoko mochi had to be reserved! I regretted my lack of research. I even thought I wouldn’t be able to die without eating the inoko mochi from Eifukuya. I regretted it so much that I reserved a large amount right there and then. I promised myself I’d definitely have them next year!

And… The day I’ve been waiting for is today! These are the inoko mochi I just bought.

They’re finally mine. Don’t you think this big pile of inoko mochi is an amazing sight? The beautiful gold stripes are bringing the boar to life. They’re so well made that I never get tired of looking at them.

Hmm? You’re asking if I’m going to eat them? To be honest, I can’t eat them. They’re sweets that I’ve waited for many years to have, you see. Eating them all by myself seems an unfortunate thing to do. But it would be difficult to hide this many sweets. I don’t want them to be eaten by mice or taken away by Toshi either.

Ah. This is perfect timing. Why don’t you feed them to me? These sweets will taster even sweeter if you feed them to me.

You’re embarrassed? It’s alright. No one is watching. Sometimes it’s good to start the day by acting like a happy couple, [bad word] on, feed them to me.

This is amazing. The warm outer layer surrounds the sweet bean paste. It has a refined and modest taste. What a perfect flavour! It was worth waiting for!
