Daniel Mangan (born April 28, 1983) is a Canadian indie folk-rock singer-songwriter.
Mangan was born in Smithers, British Columbia, but was raised in both Ontario and British Columbia - primarily Vancouver. His father was a lawyer, while his mother was an ex-minister. As a child, Mangan versed himself in his parents' old vinyls of The Beatles, Nick Drake and Van Morrison. By seven years old, his step brother had taught him how to play most of Abbey Road in proper succession on the piano.
Mangan has said he bought his first record at the age of 10, Aerosmith's Get a Grip. At sixteen, he started a band called Basement Suite with some fellow classmates and played gigs at local community centres. Basement Suite would be Mangan's introduction to the stage.
In 2003, at 20 years old, Mangan released his first acoustic EP, All at Once, pressing 500 copies which were given away and sold throughout the Vancouver area. Then, with a bank loan and a small community of musicians who would offer cheap or free sessions, Mangan recorded Postcards and Daydreaming in the summer of 2005 with local British ex-pat Daniel Elmes and good friend Simon Kelly. In July 2007, Vancouver-based independent record label FUM re-released the album with new artwork and an extra track, "Ash Babe", in Canada. Later that year, FUM released Postcards and Daydreaming in the United States as well. The following March, the record was released in Australia by ABC/Warner.
In March 2009 he released the EP Roboteering, containing songs from his forthcoming album Nice, Nice, Very Nice. Five months later, Nice, Nice, Very Nice was released in August. The first two singles from his second full-length, "Robots" and "Road Regrets" earned heavy airplay on local major radio stations in Vancouver. The album name was inspired by a line from American novelist Kurt Vonnegut, while musically Nice, Nice, Very Nice has compared to Chad Vangaalen, Bon Iver and Radiohead.
Mangan often plays in Canada, USA, Europe and Australia - and has toured and played with such artists as Elliott Brood, The Acorn, Patrick Watson, Said The Whale, Jenn Grant, Brett Dennen, Mother Mother, Geoff Berner, Great Lake Swimmers, Basia Bulat, Veda Hille and Hey Rosetta!
