Né una croce, neanche un fiore;
solo buio e umiditá.
La grazia ch'era stata dei corpi
ora offende i ricordi
trá quei sassi laggiú.
É per colpa di un' amore
e certo umana gelosia.
Il sole tenta invano di entrare
coi raggi a scaldare quel triste tempio.
Solo pietá in quello [bad word] abbraccio, niente piú.
Quadro imperfetto che mai nessuno ammirerá.
Francesca era un bel fiore;
Paolo lo raccoglierá
ma l'odio che la mano armerá
le loro vite avrá.

(The Last Embrace)

Love, that on gentle heart doth swiftly seize,
Seized this man for the person beautiful
That was ta'en from me, and still the mode offends me.

Love, that exempts no one beloved from loving,
Seized me with pleasure of this man so strongly,
That, as thou seest, it doth not yet desert me;

Love has conducted us unto one death;
