"Penny Lane"/"Strawberiv Fields Forever" была лучшей пластинкой, которую мы
записали", - вспоминал продюсер "Битлз" Джордж Мартин. В ностальгической
"Penny Lane" Маккартни отсутствовало психологическое напряжение "Strawberry
Fields" Леннона, но она была не менее технически совершенной и лирической.
Никакой другой сингл не демонстрирует так ярко взаимодополняющие таланты Леннона
и Маккартни. Если музыка Джона как бы замкнута в его сознании, то ощущение от
музыки Пола совершенно иное: он гуляет по улицам Ливерпуля с улыбкой на лице.
Музыка подчеркивает это чувство свободы, и соло Дэвида Мэйсона на трубе
усиливает впечатление. Проигрыш Мэйсона был исключен во время последнего
микширования песни, но первоначальная версия уже была отправлена в США для
использования в сигнальных копиях сингла.
