I went to my job at the general store
Found out my job wasn't there any more
I hollered at my boss and I asked what for
He said was these are just hard times

I went to the bank to get my severance pay
The teller asked for me to go away
We ain't got you money, at least not today

I went to my wife and my children at home
Looked all around and saw they had gone
note on the table only said "So long!
We got [bad word] away from these hard times"

I went to a church for to go and pray
But there on the front door a sign did say
Closed to the public for a funeral today
Lord give us help in these hard times

I went to the river and I started to cry
Weeping and a moaning screaming why oh why
I would of drowned myself but the river was dry
Ain't no escaping these hard times

I dried my eyes with my handkerchief
Put my best foot forward heavy laden with grief
Nothing left to do but to wait for relief
And the end of these long, hard times
