It was first recorded by the Friar's Society Orchestra (later the New Orleans Rhythm Kings) and popularized by Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller in the 1930s. Duke Ellington based his [bad word] "The Sergeant Was Shy" on the song. The original recording of the song was titled "Bugle Call Blues".
