"Careless Love". Traditional song of unknown origin, copyrighted by W. C. Handy in 1921. Handy published his version with modified lyrics titled "Loveless Love". Spencer Williams is sometimes credited as the co-writer. Jazz pioneer Buddy Bolden is known to have been playing the song in the early 1900s. Cornetist Chris Kelly's playing on the song in the 1920s is said to have "moved men to tears and women to tear off their clothes".
