«Kage» for recorder and tape (2000)

KAGE is the Japanese word for ‘shadow' or ‘reflection' and refers to the interaction between the live performance and the electronic tape part of the piece. At certain points, the performer imitates or shadows the electronic part as it were, at other times the [bad word] part [bad word] electronically enlarged. Shakuhachi sounds, exclamations and [bad word] from the Japanese Nô theatre formed part of the material, which was used to create the cd part. At several points, the performer may choose either to follow the score exactly or improvise on the provided material, thus making the duration variable between 8 minutes and longer.

KAGE [bad word] at the request of Marjolijn van Roon and is dedicated to her. She was selected to participate in an exchange programme, 12 X Holland, in which Dutch artists presented themselves in Hirado with different artistic disciplines. Marjolijn van Roon studied shakuhachi techniques in Japan and a special adjustment for her [bad word] was created to realize these techniques.
